How to get the most from Business Process Management Consulting

The only reason you need to engage someone offering business process management consulting services is to help you implement something you already understand.

But what usually happens?

A business process consulting company will come along with some fancy talk and promises of ROI, claims of optimisation and increased efficiency. But a business process consultant can only show you what's possible as an abstraction. And an abstraction is not real...

The increased efficiency comes from implementing sustainable changes in your organisation.

And the only person who can do that is ... You!

That's your job, not that of a consultant.

At best, a consultant can do is bring a new way of looking at your organisation, its people and its processes.

And anyone claiming to otherwise is following a template. And you simply can't squeeze you and your organisation into a template...

As a manager you are balancing the needs of people, organised vertically, with the needs of your business, organised horizontally. Business process management consulting must take this into account.

Focus only on the processes and your consultants are ignoring your people.

At their peril.

Because the people doing the work and who make up an organisation will be there long after the consultants have gone.

Testimonials

"What if he arrives with his rigid, preconceived ideas and completely misses the purpose of our application of BPM?"

That was my primary concern when we were told that Stephen would be conducting the consulting project for us.

In reality, his flexible approach and the compromises he tried to make demonstrated dramatically the issues with our inherited framework. And, through those efforts to adapt to our constraints, validated his own methodology.

Of all the experts I've had to deal with, Stephen has the deepest understanding of business processes from a business perspective.

Highly recommended, it was a pleasure working with him.
